Darwaza- a mysterious place in Turkmenistan
“Gates to the Nether”. “Gates of Hell"
It looks like an entrance to the underworld- a huge gap with flame tongues tearing away day and night. You can easily find it if you take the road from Ashgabad to Dashkhovuz (270 km) to the north. Once upon a time it used to be a bore-hole to extract natural gas. But now it is a remote region where you can meet only shephards with their camels.
The main crater is 60 m in diameter and 20 m deep. This crater with its burning flame is quite dangerous for all human beings(for example for the birds trying to fly it over) since it is not protected by fences.
Near the road you can find two more craters of the same origin.
These two craters do not throw out flames as the natural gas pressure is much weaker. On the bottom of one of them you can see bubbling liquid of light grey colour. Watching the bottom of the second one you will be wondering saturated brine of magnificent turquoise colour.
